Antarctic

Antarctic is a horror game inspired by Lovecraft's work and The Thing movie.

Description

This is a WIP project that came out of the 2 month long internship at Autentikum studio. I was the only programmer on a team of around 10 of my classmates, including concept artists, 3D artists, game designers and level designers. The goal was to create a vertical slice by ourselves with weekly meetings and feedback from the mentors at the studio.

My Responsibilities

Below are some of the main tasks I was dealing with during my time on the project

1. Programming Responsibilities

Programming Responsibilities and Successes

  • Designed and kept a clean extendable code architecture
  • Quickly setup the project with base gameplay mechanics
  • Made functional puzzle elements and systems in communication with game designers
  • Implemented "sanity" mechanic effects and suggested it's improvements
  • Created a story progressoin, monologue lines and objective tracking system
  • Worked with artists to implement their work into the game

2. Team Oriented Responsibilities

Team Oriented Responsibilities and Successes

  • Contributed in pre-production and defining the game direction
  • Worked with game designers to define the working scope and possibilities
  • Actively contributed in meetings on solving active problems and blockers
  • Provided developed and documented mechanic suggestions and prototypes
  • Excercised freedom to expand on mechanics while actively communicating with game designers
  • Invested heavily into establishing good team dynamics and helped team members understand and find their role in the team

Takeaways

  • Demonstrated engineering capabilities
  • Learned about aligning the team vision and managing conflicting interests
  • Learned when to take a step back and and not interfere too much with other roles' work
  • A good test of game dev and teamwork skills
